The Durango Double was resurrected after 6 yrs. The races consist of a 25K and 50K on Saturday and a half marathon and full marathon on Sunday. Some of the athletes participate in one of the events each day. There were quite a few who did the 50K on Saturday and then the full marathon on Sunday, and others who did the 25K on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday. Either way, they’re much stronger than I am. I could have done the half marathon, but my marathon days are over.
Since I am an avid runner myself, when the Women’s Resource Center in Durango CO put out the call for a volunteer photographer for the event, I jumped at the chance. I am a member of the Women’s Resource Center and they were the beneficiary of the race. It was two long days of photographing from 8 am to 4 pm, but it was a lot of fun and I met some great people. Many athletes came from all over the country. Here are some of the images from the race.
The 25K and 50K were run on dirt trails. Yes, there was a 13 yr old boy who ran the 50K with his dad and yes, there was a guy who ran the entire 25K in sandals! The 3 top men and women winners received a beautiful shadow box with their photo, medal, bib, and a couple other items. The half marathon and full marathon were run on roads and both races featured free beer for everyone. Those who ran both days received a ceramic plate with their name, date and race info. Those who signed up for both races, but didn’t do the second days race had to break their plates. Lots of laughs at that one.
