Newborn Session by Durango CO Photographers

I’m a photographer in Durango CO who shoots weddings, families, and boudoir sessions. Of course, all Durango CO Photographers do most of these types of sessions, so what makes me different? I like to make things perfect for your images; I’ll help you out with other vendors; If it’s a wedding, I’ll be your “day of” coordinator; if you’re a friend, I’ll even photograph your newborn baby – even though I don’t typically do those types of sessions any more.

Lizzy and Richard were married in June of 2016 and my husband (who is also a Durango Photographer) photographed their wedding at Antlers on the Creek Bed and Breakfast. My hubby and I actually live about 20 miles east of Durango in the county. Lizzy and Richard lived in Durango at the time of their wedding, but then moved into the same mountainous subdivision where we live, so now we’re neighbors! Richard is a huge fan of the Patriots football team, so of course he wanted a photo with him and his new son in their jerseys. They also have a very large dog, which makes little Landon appear even smaller.

Richard works for Four Corners Stove and Spas, and Lizzy works is an advertising media buyer who works from home. Well, as sometimes happens after a couple is married, she got pregnant. Yay! Lizzy gave me a call to see if I would photograph her new baby once he was delivered. Of course, I couldn’t say no because I love these people. I quit photographing newborns some time ago because I always had a hard time getting the parents to be ready within 5 days of the birth. I understand that it’s hard just 5-10 days afterwards, but that’s the absolute best time to photograph a newborn. They’re mostly sleeping instead of crying and fussing.

Landon Reid Moore was born a little early, so he was a tiny little thing, and so very cute. Five days after he was born, I packed up my car with lighting equipment, my camera, a backdrop, and some props and headed to their house. Even though he was a tiny thing and was only 5 days old, he was alert and fussing some of the time. It takes a long time to get shots of a newborn – haha.

I’m going to include one of their wedding photos, and then the rest are of Landon, Lizzy, and Richard.

Photographers in Durango CO provide 6 Tips for Taking Better Photos of Your Children

All parents want to take great photos of their kids, but you know how it is with those kiddos – they don’t stay still for more than a second (sometimes not even that long).   I know, your children smile on command and stay still while you get that amazing picture – yeah right!

It can also be difficult if you have less than a professional camera.  If you’re able to change settings on your camera, that helps a lot, but sometimes you have to depend on the camera to do the right thing and it doesn’t always know what you want to do.  My tips here are fairly generic and may not work with everyone’s camera, but I’m sure you can use some of these tips.

  1.  Get down to their level.  Depending on their age, you can lay on your tummy, kneel, or squat.  Shooting at their level helps them make eye contact, makes them curious (at least for a couple of seconds), and they look more natural.
  2.  Sometimes you will have to photograph them when they’re playing or doing something besides paying attention to you.  These can be really special moments when they’re deep in concentration and not making nasty faces at you.  When they’re sleeping is the absolute best time – haha.
  3. If you have the ability to set the shutter speed, set it at 250 or higher.  If it’s a bright day, you can set it 1000 as a starting point.  Getting nice portraits outside is going to work better for most of you than indoors unless you have a great big window with soft light coming through.  Then you can set them next to the window and see how long they stay put.  Get the exposure right before you try to get the kids posed.
  4. You can also try talking and joking around with them and try to get their minds off the camera.  If you have someone to help out, blowing a bubble gun makes for some really fun photos.  If you have a long telephoto lens, these work great because the clutter in the background will be blurred.
  5. The lighting is what makes a portrait great (the word “photography” means “writing or painting with light”).  When I do family portraits or children’s portraits, I do them in the evening, put the sun behind them, and then use a flash with an umbrella to light the faces.  Don’t use the flash on your camera though, it would be better to face them into the sun when it’s lower on the horizon.
  6.   Get yourself into the picture – use the self timer and a tripod

First Year Birthday Cake Smash by Durango Photographers

This is part two of JR’s First Year Birthday portrait session.  He was having so much fun and enjoying his cake so much.  He made a total mess of himself, not only on his face, but he rubbed the frosting all over his tummy and jeans.  It was hysterical.  I was having a hard time taking his photographs because I was laughing so hard.

After we were done with the session, Jim and Jayme had to give him a bath in my tub because there was no way they were going to get him home in his condition.  Jayme said “I don’t think it’s legal to put your baby in a plastic bag to get him home”:}

Jayme says she never feeds JR sweet stuff, so this was hard for her to watch, but you know it’s just one time, right.  No, he’s had 3 birthday parties already with cakes, so this was number 4.  I don’t like cake or frosting either, so I understand where she’s coming from.

JR’s 1st Birthday Portrait Session by Durango Photographers

Jim and Jayme signed up for my Bellies and Babies Plan when she was pregnant with JR over a year ago.  We did their maternity, newborn, 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, and now the First Year Birthday.  I’m going to post these in two segments because there are so many cute photographs.

We re-created some of the images that we did when they were pregnant with JR.  If you want to see that post, click here

As you can see, Jayme is going to have another little boy, a brother for JR.  They are such awesome parents.

The images I will post tomorrow are the cake smash segment that we did in my studio.  They are so adorable (and very messy), so check back tomorrow.

Baby Augie’s Portraits by Durango CO Photographers

Little Augie’s Grandma called me from Parker CO to purchase a portrait session for her new grandson and his mom and dad.  Augie was around 6 weeks old when they came for their session.  Grandma came to Durango to meet her new grandbaby so I was able to get the whole family.  We did some indoor and some outdoor shots in the snow.

I loved this family – they were so nice and patient (babies don’t always cooperate the way you would like).  Just as we were getting ready to head outdoors, he fell asleep.

When Augie’s mom came to view the images, she thought I had got maybe 4 good shots.  She was blown away that I had 31 beautiful portraits of her new baby.

Sun Birds head into Snow Country by Photographers Durango CO

This lovely family came from different parts of the country including Arizona, Texas, and Florida.  They came to play at Durango Mountain Resort and do some shopping in downtown Durango which is a beautiful 1880’s western type town with amazing shops.

A few of them weren’t used to the cold, but were real troopers getting their family portraits taken.

If you think I was able to get everyone smiling and looking at me at the same time – No!  There were head swaps involved here.
