Southwest Wedding Bazaar: Photographed by Durango Photographers, Part 2

This is Part 2 of the blog post covering the South West Wedding Bazaar that I, the talented Durango Photographer (haha) photographed. You can view Part One here.

This was the first Wedding Bazaar put on by Meg Roberts, who is a wedding planner and owner of Bride + Tribe here in Durango CO.  There were three weddings that were all staged – one of the couples has been married for 9 years, the second couple has been together for 6 yrs but have no plans to get married, and the third couple has been together for a few years, and might get married at some point. That’s the couple I will be showing you here.

Their names are Kytt and Casey. Kytt works for Durango Nursery and Supply, and Casey works for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. They were full of fun and energy and were very photogenic!

Their wedding ceremony was held right next to the lake at River Bend Ranch.  Unfortunately, water had not yet been released to fill the lake, but it will be soon. It’s a beautiful location to get married! When the officiant, Scott Perez, asked the crowd if anybody objected to this marriage, he pulled his coat aside to make sure they saw his gun and he was ready to pull it out – that was hysterical. Luckily, nobody objected.

The flowers, which were blowing in the wind, were supplied by April’s Garden Weddings and they were just gorgeous. I just love the flower arrangement (sort of like a lei) that Casey wore around his neck.

After the ceremony we took them to the dock, which I think looks kinda cool with the red from the mountains in the background reflecting in the water. I asked Kytt to pick up Casey and their pose was so awesome. I love it when unexpected things like that happen.

One of the cozy set ups at the ceremony site involved some blue velvet couches and chairs along with an old fashioned trunk, so we absolutely had to utilize those for photos. Kytt and Casey were game for anything, so I had them put on their sunglasses and give me the “I am so cool” look. Of course, they had drinks provided by Toast Mobile Lounge, which is a necessity for any outdoor wedding or event, so I had them toast each other.

River Bend Ranch has some gorgeous bushes and trees (not all of them had leafed out yet). They make lovely backgrounds when the sun is setting over the mountain. Kytt and Casey are so comfortable together and show their love in genuine ways.

Southwest Wedding Bazaar: Photographs by Durango Photographers

On a cold day in January, I met with Meg Roberts of Southwest Wedding Bazaar. She told me she was holding this event at River Bend Ranch in Durango CO on April 27, 2019. She was recruiting vendors and couples who would participate and after listening to all the details, I wholeheartedly agreed to be a part of this wedding event. This was the first time anything like this had been attempted here in our little town.

The plan was to have 3 “fake weddings” and she needed lots of vendors to help out. She already had 2 other Durango Photographers and needed one more. It actually ended up that there were 5 Durango Photographers and a couple of videographers there so we all had to be strategic.

Meg did such an awesome job decorating all of the wedding sites and the entire ranch. Durango Party Rental provided some of the items, such as the long wooden tables and chairs. The first wedding took place at the farthest end of the property. The flower arrangements and wedding bouquet were provided by Linnaea Farms, and Marje did a fabulous job with everything including the flowers climbing up the tree. She even made the earrings that the bride wore out of real flowers. The Bohemian style dress was provided by Bri’s Bridal and was just beautiful.

Here are some photos from Wedding #1:

The second wedding was supposed to take place on a site a little ways a way from the first one. Everything was set up – the metal arch decorated with flowers, vases of flowers, a couple of beautiful couches and chairs. Right before it was supposed to start, a sand/wind storm started up. A few of us were at the site when it happened and we just held onto the vases until it slowed down a bit. It was decided to move the wedding into the reception barn so we all carried the decorations into the barn.

It all turned out wonderful – the bride and groom were super happy and we were able to take them out for a few photos after the ceremony even though it was still really windy (the sand wasn’t blowing quite so hard though). The three little girls with them were just adorable and were having a great time. Right after the ceremony, the bride and groom broke out in a spontaneous dance. The bride told me later that they had choreographed it just the night before. I love it when the unexpected happens.

The dress was provided by Occasions Bridal and the Flowers were provided by Adele Floral and Natalie did a great job with these.

Sara and Bobby’s Engagement Session by Durango Photographers

My husband and I are Durango Photographers and Sarah and Bobby hired us to do their engagement session. They live in Durango, but unfortunately for me, they’re getting married in the Denver area, so we won’t be able to photograph their wedding.

Bobby is a software engineer who loves dogs and cars. Bet you couldn’t tell that they both love dogs – haha. He loves to work on his car, racing cars, playing video games, biking, hiking, and kayaking. Wow, he’s a busy guy.

Sarah is a full time student who loves dancing and art.  She loves pole dancing, singing, and creating digital art drawings. I’ve seen some of her drawings and they’re amazing. They like to go for fun drives, take the dogs out to play, enjoying local restaurants, and having laid back time together.

We had a lot of fun, but I gotta tell ya, trying to photograph 3 doggies is not the easiest thing in the world. So happy there were no babies in the mix:}

Enjoy their images.

Durango CO Photographers make memories for a beautiful family

Mike and Janna came from Ft Collins CO to Durango CO with their two sons.  They were staying up at Purgatory Resort so we did their family portrait session in that location because it’s quite beautiful up there in the mountains.  Like most people, they would love to move to Durango and I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have a problem finding jobs here.

Mike is a fire captain and Jenna is a teacher, and the boys keep them both busy with lots of activities. Braden is into hockey and doing jumps with his bike, and Bennett loves to swim.

There were a couple of bumps in the road on our way to their family session. First it started raining, and then it stopped. Then Ken and I got a flat tire after apparently running over a large screw. We were running out of time and light, so this was the fastest tire changing session ever (well, except maybe for those pit stops during auto races). We made it with plenty of time to complete their portraits before it got too dark.

We love to photograph fun and fabulous families, so if you would like your family memories turned into forever heirlooms, get in touch with us.

Enjoy and thanks for looking.

Susan and Roger’s Cowboy Wedding by Durango CO Photographers

Susan and Roger are members of the Cowboy Church in Durango CO. This tent in the open field is the site for the new church that will be going up at some point. They meet in this tent once a week on Sundays and have a chuck wagon dinner once a month. They had this same chuck wagon at the wedding for the reception dinner.

They met in the tent at the Durango Cowboy Church property. Roger thought Susan looked great and went over to talk to her. They’ve been together ever since, and that was on July 4, 2016.  They were engaged a month later – hey, when you know, you know. They both love the outdoors and horses. There were some horses in the field, but I couldn’t get them to ride them – darn.

Susan is a registered nurse in Pueblo CO and Roger is a pipeline inspector. He actually grew up in Durango and still has a home here, but he is moving to Pueblo with Susan. She has 3 grown children who were fun and loved to dance.

They had Steve from Mr Soul Entertainment as their DJ – he was the person who recommended me to them to be their photographer.

If you notice a lot of hair blowing around, it was extremely windy. Luckily, my hubby is good at holding the umbrella which we use with a flash for lighting. Otherwise, he might have blown away.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and viewing the wedding images.

Tips From Couples Planning a Destination Wedding by Durango Photographers

Destination weddings to Durango CO are a big part of my business (as well as other photographers in town).  Most of us also do a lot of elopements here, but those aren’t included in this article. This is more about couples who have arranged weddings with guests and wedding parties.  I’ll talk about elopements that couples have arranged in Durango in another post. These are the tips from brides and grooms in their own words:

Lizzy and Richard Moore – They had just recently moved to Durango when they called us about photographing their upcoming wedding. We were extremely delighted that they chose us and have since become friends – they actually moved to a house last spring that is right up the road from us.  Their wedding was held at Antlers on the Creek Bed and Breakfast in Durango.  Susan is the owner and proprietor and does a fabulous job of taking care of her guests.  It was a small wedding with around 25 guests, with a maid of honor and a best man.

Lizzy’s tips are to delegate, delegate, delegate (at least as much as you’re comfortable with), so you can focus on enjoying the experience. The day of, keep it low key with the only priority being getting ready and saying “I Do”.  Don’t try to do too much.  Eat!  Don’t forget to eat breakfast and make time at the reception to eat.  It will help with nerves and absorb alcohol.  I (Karen) would add that you should also drink water all day long.

Have a plan for the day after:  If you need to return rentals or drop off the marriage license, make sure those things are planned for.  Let things roll off your back. If someone cancels at the last minute, or family is being family, don’t get caught up in the drama that will take away from having a perfect day.

Lizzy’s dress came from Occasions Bridal in Durango (I love Donna, the owner – she has the most amazingly beautiful dresses), and her officiant was Chessa Gill.

Maggie and Nick Kusmit –  They came to Colorado from Georgia where they were living at the time.  Nick was in the military and stationed in South Carolina, just across the border from Georgia. He wore his gorgeous military blues for the wedding.

Maggie says that arranging a destination wedding has its challenges.  Finding a local caterer and baker who can understand your vision took some work, and then there are the climate differences (they were married on New Years Eve, so it was cold and they weren’t used to that). But, with patience and perseverance, it can be the most wonderful outcome and truly amazing day. Photographers can be hard as well. It took me 3-4 calls to other photographers in Durango before I found Karen Skelly Photography.

Near the end of their wedding, we went outside with their bottle of champagne.  I had Nick shake the bottle just a little, and when he opened it, champagne spray went everywhere. I just love that shot.

Lisa and Jon Peterson – They came from California to get married at Silverpick Lodge in Durango CO.  Lisa is a special needs teacher, so it’s a given that the has lots of patience. Jon works in IT and is an army reservist. They’re both funny and fun to be around.

They had around 100 guests at their wedding, as well as 3 bridesmaids, 3 groomsmen, 3 flower girls, and 3 ring bearers (including their dog, Siren). I designed a 10×10 hard paged wedding album for them that they absolutely love and will cherish forever, and pass down to their children and grand children. Since the wedding, they’ve had a baby and adopted another fur baby.

Lisa’s tip is to stay on top of the wedding day timeline (so all of the vendors are in sync), and keep open lines of communications. It helps to take suggestions from vendors you are working with to find other vendors you need for the wedding. Take trips to visit the location, twice if you can. Keep an open mind and try not to get worried about small stuff.

Her flowers were designed by Cindy at Wildwoods Fine Flowers, the DJ was Steve from Mr Soul Entertainment, and the cake was made by Jocelyn at Skillfully Decadent.

Christine and Rosie – They came from Texas and knew they wanted to get married and share their love with family and friends in Durango CO. After searching for wedding venues, they found Silverpick Lodge in Durango CO.  Chris at Silverpick Lodge is a friend and colleague, so we trust and refer each other to clients.  That’s how Christine and Rosie found Karen Skelly Photography. Both Chris and I helped them find other vendors like Steve at Mr Soul Entertainment for their DJ, Cindy at Wildwoods Fine Flowers, and Luda who is a cake artist.

Christine said she had been looking for a photographer in Durango and after chatting with me, she knew they were in good hands.  Her tip is to talk to people and you’ll find what you’re looking for.  Also, go with the flow because if you worry about every little thing, you’ll miss your perfect day.

There was a blizzard the morning of their wedding day, so the ceremony was moved in doors – you never know what might happen around here.

Sister in Laws and Best Friends Boudoir Session by Durango CO Photographer

These two gals became sister in laws when they married brothers. They didn’t know each other before that, but now they’re best friends and are NOT shy at all – haha. I love it when they’re not shy. The one sister was gifted at doing makeup and hair, so she did both of them and I think she did a marvelous job.

They wanted to do a few of the poses together and each put them into their albums that they gave their husbands. They were especially excited to do the shot with them holding glasses of wine and doing some baking with flour.  They somehow got flour hand prints on each other’s butts. We had to try a couple of different ways, but they were so happy with this and I was laughing MY butt off.

I love love love corsets and she had so many that we didn’t have time to use them all. I liked the pink and green ones the best and you can see those below.  The shot with the high heel shoes and thong is one of my favorites.

Have you ever gifted your significant other with a Boudoir Album? If so, I want to know their reaction – surprised, shocked, impressed, happy, in love. Please share!

I usually do these sessions at my home and I’m the only one there. I have a spare bedroom with antique type furniture, our main bedroom with a dark red wall, and we go behind my house where nobody can see. It’s all very private. I also serve a small amount of wine to get the ladies ready to pose:}
