She came to Durango for her Senior Portraits by Durango Photographers

Hayley is an outdoorsy girl. She loves to hike, skateboard, snowboard, participate in water sports, and read a book in her hammock. She also loves adventure and travel.

She lives in Ohio, but wants to go to college at Ft Lewis College here in Durango, so her and her mom combined the school visit with a senior portrait session.

She is president of the Environmental Club, is a member of LINKS (Liberation in North Korea), plays the piano, and loves going to concerts. Her favorite musician is Bob Dylan (as you can see by her portrait with one of his albums).

Thanks for looking and Enjoy!

Twin Sister’s High School Senior Portraits by Durango CO Photographers

Julia and Kate are twins – I know they don’t look much alike, almost like they planned it that way. I think they did:}  They are both somewhat reserved and shy, but are super smart and beautiful.  They attend Durango High School in Durango CO.

Julia loves bluegrass music – she plays the trombone, bass, accordion, and ukulele.  She’s also on the Knowledge Bowl Team and in the Book Club.  Her hobbies are hiking, art, music, and reading. She’s headed off to college in the fall.

Kate loves jazz, classical, and classic rock music.  She plays the flute and saxaphone.  Her hobbies are art, crossfit, swimming, and reading.  She’s also headed off to college in the fall.

I photographed their brother a couple of years ago and he’s also super smart and is at college right now studying to be a doctor.

Enjoy!

This Senior Girl loves her horses and Cello by Photographers in Durango CO

Jenna is a senior this year at Durango High School in Durango CO.  She’s one of the smartest young women I’ve ever met.  She is in many AP Classes in school and spent part of the year going to school in Germany as an exchange student.  She speaks several languages including German and French (and, of course, English).

She has two horses, Sebastian and Romeo, which she rides and takes care of, as well as rides in equestrian events here in Durango and around the country.  She will be attending the University of Aberdeen in Scotland where she will also ride on their equestrian team.  She’s going to study English Literature and Creative Writing.  Her dream is to become a writer, which she loves to do as well as reading.  I’ve read some of her work, and it’s outstanding.  I should have had her write this blog post:-}

She also loves to play the cello as you can see from a couple of her photographs.  She’s my best friend’s daughter and I can’t wait to see how far she goes in life – which I’m sure will be very very far.

Enjoy!

What Do You Charge? by Durango CO Photographer

This is the question I usually receive when someone is making an inquiry about my photography services.  It’s also a very hard question to just answer with no other information.  For instance, if they in asking about wedding photography, I need to find out their wedding date, where they are getting married, how many guests they are inviting, how long the ceremony will take, where they are getting ready, how long they plan to have the reception and is everything at the same place.  Most of this information is to help them figure out a time line so they know how many hours they will need to hire me for.

For weddings I have several Collections as well as a la carte items from which they can choose.  I really want to help them get the most bang for their buck so they aren’t just paying for a few hours and a cd of the images.  While the cd is important in this day and age, I am a firm believer that a wedding album is so important because it is the first family heirloom that will be passed down to their children and all future generations.  Studies have shown that 95% of people never do anything with the cd of wedding images and my unscientific inquiries show the same thing.  I even know many photographers who have never done anything with their own wedding cd.

The same issues apply to a family who wants a portrait of the wife, husband, and kiddos.  A cd will more than likely be put into a drawer and will become useless in around 5 yrs.  A wall portrait, an album, an image box, and gift prints are so much better than a few 5x7s or 8x10s printed at Walmart (which has terrible prints due to cheap paper and ink and they’re way too glossy).  I realize it may seem expensive if you just look at the total investment, but take that amount and view it as a lifetime of having those memories for yourself, and all later generations.  As my tag line says “Portraits are not expensive, they’re priceless”!

Now, I realize there are a gazillion other photographers out there.  Many do terrific work and I have no problem with people hiring them – many of them are friends.  Then there are the “photographers”  who bought a nice camera, set it on auto and let the camera decide the exposure.  They claim to be “natural light photographers”, which simply means they don’t know how to use off camera flash or strobes.  It also means you will probably have raccoon eyes and dark faces, or they’ll face you into the sun and you’ll be squinting.  Neither is a pretty look.  If  you really want to have beautiful portraits, hire a professional.  You really do get what you pay for.

When I photograph families, seniors, wedding parties, and almost everything else, I always use an off camera flash with a white umbrella which makes nice soft beautiful light.  When the flash is off the camera the shadows sculpt the body it makes for a more 3d look instead of flat 2d.   I always put my subjects with the sun at their back or to their side and I try to shoot at the time of day that has the best light.  These are things professionals know how to do as well as using the camera and flash on manual for complete control, how to pose subjects so they look their best, how to instruct them on what to wear and the best locations.  I’ve invested a lot of time and money to learn these things and practice to perfection because I want happy clients.

So, now it’s your turn.  I would like to hear your opinion on professional photographers, what you have done to get your family or wedding portraits, and anything else you would like to add to this post.  Thank you in advance!

Brandon’s Senior Portraits by Durango Photographers

Brandon will be graduating this year from Bayfield High School.  He plans to head off to college to study pre-med and later go into pediatrics.  He’s on the cross country and track teams and plays basketball.  Like most people in this area, he also loves to hike.

He has a great smile and is so intelligent.

Enjoy

Chris’ Senior Portraits by Durango Senior Photographers

Chris is an amazing kid.  He actually wanted some of his senior portraits with books because he is a voracious reader.  He also loves to play jazz on the piano.

I was blown away by his intelligence and drive to succeed.  He plans to attend college and study physics or some other scientific/mathematical subject.  He hasn’t quite decided.

Here are some things Chris and his mom had to say about the session:

Why did you come to our studio?  Referred by a friend

How would you describe your session?  The session was very comfortable and fun.  The pre-planning helped to make it so comfortable.

If you could do your session over again, what, if anything, would you do differently?  The only thing that would have made it better would to have done them in spring or summer.

You may have seen portraits taken by someone with a camera who is not a professional.  Comparing them to yours, what advice would you give to a friend who may think a snapshot is “good enough”?   Professional portraits are worlds apart from snapshots.

What would you tell another parent who is considering senior portraits with us?  Worth every penny!

Chris and his mother would have preferred to have their session earlier in the year.  This is why I suggest to every senior and parent to get this done before their senior year starts.  Once school starts, it gets busy and it’s hard to find time to do your portraits.

Senior Portraits by Durango Senior Photographers

Amanda goes to Dolores High School near Cortez CO.  She’s a star swimmer on the swim team at her school and also plays volley ball.  She loves hats, so I brought along one of my favorite hats and a little jean jacket, which she also loved.

Here’s what they had to say about their session:

What did you like about our photography that you didn’t see in portraits from other studios?   Answer:  Fun Props

How would you describe your session?  Answer: Fun, Lots of Variety, Flexible

What did you like best about your portraits?  Answer: Quality of Light, composition of background

If you could do your session over again, what, if anything, would you do differently?  Nothing

You may have seen portraits taken by someone with a camera who is not a professional.  Comparing them to yours, what advice would you give to a friend/family member/high school senior who may think a snapshot is “good enough”?   Answer:  You will be missing that something extra special
