Elopement Wedding Tips by Photographers in Durango CO

This is Part 1 of 2

My husband, Ken, and I are photographers in Durango CO and we love to photograph elopements. It’s usually just the couple and us at the location of the ceremony. Sometimes there’s an officiant, but it’s not required in Colorado. You can marry yourself and just sign the Marriage License and you’re all set. We’ve acted as the witnesses many many times.

Elopements are great for both the couple and the photographers. There’s less stress and more time to capture all those great couples portraits that we sometimes don’t have time for during a full day wedding. We photograph a lot of elopements in Durango CO because it’s a beautiful destination wedding location.

Here are some tips that you can apply (or not):

  1. Should you keep it a secret? Well, this is up to you, but make sure you have a good reason ready to tell your loved ones and friends who might feel hurt that they didn’t get to attend your special day. There are also some elopements where the parents and siblings are at the ceremony, and that works out well for some couples. You can always have a reception back home once you’re married. Most of your family and friends will be happy with this. If you’re doing this, let us know because we will definitely have the photos ready for your reception date so you can show everyone a slideshow.

  2.  I know I’m a bit biased, but the photographer should be the first vendor you contact. I always help my clients who are coming to Durango from somewhere else. They usually need a florist, a hair and makeup artist, and maybe an officiant. I know all the best ones, and will email their contact information so they can get a bouquet, special pampering with hair and makeup, and someone to marry them. If the couple decides to have us at their elopement, we have an on-line Wedding Photography Agreement and a Wedding Information form that we send to them so everything is super easy and stress free. We also know some beautiful spots to have your elopement and can send you photos so you can choose the one you love. This one was during the winter, but it’s also lovely in the summer and fall.

  1. You can go on the tourism site for the city where you are going to elope. The Durango Tourism website (Durango.org) has a wealth of information, including things you can do while you’re visiting here, because obviously you will want to make a vacation out of the elopement. It’s a great place for a destination wedding because there are so many fun things to do while you’re here.

  2. Your budget is totally up to you, of course, but contact different vendors to get an idea of how much everything will cost and then you can make better plans. If you want to get fancy, we know of a company who provides small tables with elegant dishware, glasses, pillows to sit on, candles, and other gorgeous decorations that you can use to serve up some champagne and a couple of cupcakes. These will make for some excellent photographs.

Southwest Wedding Bazaar: Photographs by Durango Photographers

On a cold day in January, I met with Meg Roberts of Southwest Wedding Bazaar. She told me she was holding this event at River Bend Ranch in Durango CO on April 27, 2019. She was recruiting vendors and couples who would participate and after listening to all the details, I wholeheartedly agreed to be a part of this wedding event. This was the first time anything like this had been attempted here in our little town.

The plan was to have 3 “fake weddings” and she needed lots of vendors to help out. She already had 2 other Durango Photographers and needed one more. It actually ended up that there were 5 Durango Photographers and a couple of videographers there so we all had to be strategic.

Meg did such an awesome job decorating all of the wedding sites and the entire ranch. Durango Party Rental provided some of the items, such as the long wooden tables and chairs. The first wedding took place at the farthest end of the property. The flower arrangements and wedding bouquet were provided by Linnaea Farms, and Marje did a fabulous job with everything including the flowers climbing up the tree. She even made the earrings that the bride wore out of real flowers. The Bohemian style dress was provided by Bri’s Bridal and was just beautiful.

The second wedding was supposed to take place on a site a little ways a way from the first one. Everything was set up – the metal arch decorated with flowers, vases of flowers, a couple of beautiful couches and chairs. Right before it was supposed to start, a sand/wind storm started up. A few of us were at the site when it happened and we just held onto the vases until it slowed down a bit. It was decided to move the wedding into the reception barn so we all carried the decorations into the barn.

It all turned out wonderful – the bride and groom were super happy and we were able to take them out for a few photos after the ceremony even though it was still really windy (the sand wasn’t blowing quite so hard though). The three little girls with them were just adorable and were having a great time. Right after the ceremony, the bride and groom broke out in a spontaneous dance. The bride told me later that they had choreographed it just the night before. I love it when the unexpected happens.

The dress was provided by Occasions Bridal and the Flowers were provided by Adele Floral and Natalie did a great job with these.

Sara and Bobby’s Engagement Session by Durango Photographers

My husband and I are Durango Photographers and Sarah and Bobby hired us to do their engagement session. They live in Durango, but unfortunately for me, they’re getting married in the Denver area, so we won’t be able to photograph their wedding.

Bobby is a software engineer who loves dogs and cars. Bet you couldn’t tell that they both love dogs – haha. He loves to work on his car, racing cars, playing video games, biking, hiking, and kayaking. Wow, he’s a busy guy.

Sarah is a full time student who loves dancing and art.  She loves pole dancing, singing, and creating digital art drawings. I’ve seen some of her drawings and they’re amazing. They like to go for fun drives, take the dogs out to play, enjoying local restaurants, and having laid back time together.

We had a lot of fun, but I gotta tell ya, trying to photograph 3 doggies is not the easiest thing in the world. So happy there were no babies in the mix:}

Enjoy their images.

Engagement Session with boy, girl, and snake by durango co photographers

Yes, A Snake – a bull snake to be exact. We were up at the Lion’s Den near Ft Lewis College in Durango CO, and just as we were leaving a bull snake came slithering by our feet. We all jumped a mile, and then Matt said “do you want to take a photo with us holding the snake”, and I said “hell ya”. So he picked it up behind the head and they had a great time, and then wanted to take him home. Kristie’s mom and dad were with us and they vetoed that idea – haha.

We also went to the little park by the Chapel just down the road from Lion’s Den and had a fun time with Matt throwing Kristie over his shoulder, then doing a piggy back ride, and them sitting on the bench overlooking the town. We went to the river and did some photos with them sitting on rocks, and to another small park where there’s a creek running through it and they sat on a log and a park bench.

They’re getting married in September at Dalton Ranch Golf Club. They signed up for that venue at the Wedding Expo back in January. I had the booth right next to them, but Kristie doesn’t remember meeting me there. Here mom just happened to contact me by phone after a google search for durango photographers. So happy we got together for their engagement session and their upcoming wedding.

Enjoy and Thanks for Looking.

Intimate Boudoir Session by Durango CO Photographers

Boudoir by definition means a lady’s dressing room, used for dressing and sleeping. Or in photography it means suggestive images meant to tease the senses.

I think this lovely lady is teasing the senses beautifully, and her hubby loved the album she gave him as a gift. Of course, I don’t show images with her face to keep her privacy.

As with almost every lady I have photographed in a boudoir setting, she was a bit nervous – but a little wine helps, right?

Enjoy and Thanks for Looking.

Wedding in the Snow by Photographers in Durango CO

Dawn and Bill are from Texas where it doesn’t snow too much and there aren’t any mountains or beautiful scenery.  They chose the gorgeous Antler’s on the Creek Bed and Breakfast in Durango CO for their elopement rendezvous.  The beautiful rose bouquet was created by April’s Garden also in Durango, and Chessa Gill was the amazing officiant.

Bill works for Budweiser, and you’ll notice the bud in his hand in a couple photos, and Dawn is the owner of a large athletics gym in TX that teaches young people gymnastics, cheer leading, dancing, and how to grow up to be strong adults.  They are amazing people and I hope they can retire to Durango some day.

They are also crazy and lots of fun. They wanted to get in that snow and play!  You’ll see where they tried to make snow angels, but the snow was a little too crusty so it  just turned into a laugh fest. And those chairs they’re sitting in, yes, they’re covered in hard snow. They were pretty wet by the time we were finished and so they hopped into the hot tub to warm up.

Enjoy!
